How to get ready to give blood

Simple steps before, during and after your donation make it easier and safer.

A whole blood donation takes only about 10 minutes, and a little preparation makes it easier and safer for you.

The day before

  • Get a good night's sleep.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat iron-rich foods such as lentils, beans, spinach and red meat.

On the day

  • Have a light, low-fat meal two to three hours before your appointment.
  • Drink two glasses of water before you donate.
  • Bring your ID and wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily.
  • Tell the staff about any medicines you take.

Afterwards

  • Rest for 10 to 15 minutes and have a drink and a snack.
  • Drink more fluids than usual for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid heavy exercise and lifting with the donation arm for the rest of the day.

You can give whole blood again after 56 days. You will find the date on your donor pass in Jiwark.
